Frequently asked
questions
Do I need to separate my jewelry scrap by karat?
No, separating by karat isn’t necessary. Unless you specifically request separate processing, all material is melted and assayed together. If you provide an expected karat or gold content, we’ll compare our results to your figures for accuracy.
Can you refine Canadian and U.S. gold and silver coins?
Yes, we refine all U.S. gold and silver coins. We’re also authorized to refine Canadian silver coins through a permit from the Ministry of Finance. We purchase Canadian fine gold coins as pure metal transactions. However, we do not accept commemorative Canadian gold coins for refining.
Is there a minimum quantity required to send in material?
No minimum is required. We accept all lot sizes, including small bullion or sweep lots. Just keep in mind that for smaller shipments, shipping and refining costs may reduce the overall value returned.
Do you pay cash for scrap jewelry?
Yes we do! We can offer an estimate based on your description of the material. However, this is
not a guaranteed quote
—final settlement is based on our in-house assay results. While we aim to provide accurate estimates, actual values may vary depending on the material’s composition. Once the jewelry has been accurately assessed, we offer cash or check payments on the spot.
What’s the most accurate method for testing gold purity?
Fire assay
is the gold standard for accuracy in the precious metals industry and is used for all our refining settlements. While
X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF)
is fast and non-destructive, it’s less precise—typically showing up to a 2% variance compared to fire assay. We use both technologies on-site but rely exclusively on fire assay for final valuations.
How can I be sure the refining process is accurate and transparent?
We offer several safeguards for your peace of mind. Upon request, we can provide a pin sample or hold your material until you approve the results. For high-value lots, we can involve a neutral third-party umpire if needed. You’re also welcome to
witness the melting process
. All equipment is regularly calibrated and our procedures are independently audited under our
ISO 9001 certification
.
Do you offer gold or silver investment bars?
Yes! We offer certified gold investment bars directly from our refinery. Silver and platinum bars are available upon request and must be ordered in advance.
Can I receive my payment in physical gold instead of cash?
Yes, Melting Bar offers the option to receive your settlement in the form of physical gold. We provide certified 24K gold bars or casting grain, ideal for jewelers, manufacturers, or investors seeking to reinvest in pure gold. Simply let us know your preference when submitting your materials, and we'll accommodate your request.
